Arrival at Blackwood Lake
Deep in the woods of Maine, there is a very quiet and scary lake called Blackwood Lake. It was a very cold night at the end of October 2025. It had been raining heavily for days, and there were big floods. The water rose so high that the cabins by the lake looked like small islands.
Ethan and his new wife, Clara, arrived at Ethan’s family home. They had been married for only eight months. This was Clara’s very first Thanksgiving weekend with Ethan’s family.
The Night Boat Ride
The moon was bright and silver in the night sky. The moonlight shone on the dark water, making it look like millions of silver coins were floating. A cold breeze blew, and everyone felt chilly. Ethan lived in a crowded city, so this quiet nature felt exciting to him. He wanted to go for a boat ride in the dark. He convinced his family to come along.
The family had a small wooden boat. Ethan's father, Thomas, was an experienced boater, so he steered the boat.
Ethan, his mother Eleanor, and his sister Lily sat on the wooden benches in the middle.
Clara sat right at the front of the boat, letting her legs hang over the edge.
Clara held her camera and took photos of the beautiful moonlit lake. The clock showed it was around 9:45 PM. The boat moved smoothly through the quiet water.
The Sunken Church and the Attack
They rowed deeper into the lake. Soon, they reached a place where an old, abandoned church used to stand. Because of the flood, the church was underwater. Only the very top spire of the church stuck out above the lake. Ethan and his family had visited this spot two days ago during the day, but tonight felt very different and scary.
Suddenly, Ethan felt a terrible chill down his back. He felt that something was wrong. He whispered to his father:
"Dad, turn the boat around. This place does not feel right. We need to leave immediately."
Thomas saw that Ethan was scared, so he quickly turned the boat around. But they were too late.
Suddenly, the air became freezing cold. Right at that moment, Clara screamed very loudly. It was a terrifying scream of pure pain. She grabbed both sides of her head and fell to the floor of the boat. Her body shook violently, and her eyes opened very wide. She made painful groaning sounds but could not speak a single word. Her head was hurting terribly.
Searching for Help
They rushed Clara back to the cabin, but she did not get better. The pain in her head was too strong. She started banging her head against the wall, and her tears looked as red as blood. Thomas knew that a regular local doctor could not cure this problem. He believed it was a supernatural sickness.
An old spiritual medium named Old Silas lived on the other side of the lake. Ethan and Thomas got back into the boat and rowed through the thick midnight fog to Silas's house. They told the old man what happened.
Silas shook his head and said:
"I am too old, boy. My old body cannot fight this dark power. You must call Dr. Samuel in the next county. Only he can help you."
Silas gave them the doctor's phone number and closed his door. Ethan and Thomas called Dr. Samuel immediately. However, the doctor refused to come because the lake was too dangerous to cross at night. Ethan and his father had no choice. They started rowing back to their cabin alone.
The Strange Shadow in the Woods
As they rowed home, they passed a thick forest of pine trees along the shore. Ethan looked toward the dark trees and saw something terrifying. A massive, pitch-black shadow came out of the woods.
The shadow had arms and legs like a human.
It had completely no face.
As the boat moved faster, the shadow walked along the shore at the exact same speed.
The scariest part was that even though the creature had no eyes, Ethan felt it was staring directly at him. Ethan froze in fear. He told his father, "Dad! Look toward the woods! What is that?" Thomas looked, but he saw nothing at all. A moment later, the dark shadow vanished into the air.
Shadows on the Water
When they got back to the cabin, Clara was in even worse condition. Her body was twisting, and she was in terrible pain. The family stayed awake through the nightmare night. The next morning, they tried the remedies that Silas had suggested, but nothing worked. They felt completely helpless.
The next night, Ethan stood on the front porch of the cabin and looked out at the foggy lake. His heart stopped. He saw two pitch-black shadows walking across the water! They were not in a boat; they were walking right on top of the misty water. They were walking straight toward the cabin.
Ethan shouted in fear, ran inside the house, and locked the door. The whole family realized that the evil force from the lake was coming to destroy them. Ethan’s parents said:
"If we stay here, we will all die. Take Clara to her parents' house in Texas tomorrow morning."
The Truth and the Healing
At dawn, Ethan escaped from the cabin with Clara. They traveled far away to Texas, to the neighborhood where Clara’s mother lived. In that neighborhood, there was a famous and powerful spiritual medium.
The medium looked at Clara and closed his eyes. He spoke to his own good spirits to find out the truth. When he opened his eyes, he told Ethan what had happened on the lake:
The Trap: Six ancient, dark spirits were hiding under the water near the sunken church.
The Mistake: When Clara was taking photos, she looked directly into the water. Her eyes met the eyes of one of the evil spirits. Clara thought it was just her own shadow, but it was actually the gaze of an ancient evil.
The Chase: The moment their eyes locked, a male spirit attacked Clara's mind. It followed her back to the cabin. Later, a female spirit joined it. Those were the two shadows Ethan saw walking on top of the water.
The medium comforted them and said, "Do not be afraid. I am sending two of my good spirits. Within 24 hours, they will chase the dark shadows away and free Clara. You will not even notice it happen."
The medium was right. Within the next 24 hours, Clara’s terrible headache completely disappeared. She became completely healthy again. The dark shadows of Blackwood Lake never bothered them ever again.
