In 1965, in a foggy town named Blackwood in Virginia, this story began. It was told by my grandfather, Arthur, many years ago. Arthur was young then and spent a big part of his life in this mysterious town. On a hot summer Saturday, Arthur went to visit his in-laws in Blackwood with his wife. He did not know that a terrifying dark world was hidden behind that quiet town.
That afternoon, Arthur went to a local diner to drink coffee with his brother-in-law, Thomas. During their chat, Thomas whispered:
"Arthur, next Tuesday, there is a game in the open field deep inside the forest. It is not a normal game. It is called the 'Line of Shadows'. You won't believe it until you see it."
Arthur was curious and asked what kind of game it was. Thomas only smiled mysteriously and said, "If you know everything now, the thrill will be ruined. Just be ready."
Part 1: Hell Inside the Circle
Tuesday came quickly. At exactly 3:00 PM, Thomas came and called Arthur. Deep in the forest, where the shadows of the pine trees fell on the ground, hundreds of people gathered. In the middle of the field, a huge circle was drawn with white chalk. A straight line went right through the middle, dividing the circle into two perfect halves.
Arthur looked at Thomas with a frown. Thomas then revealed the real truth. This was not a game for ordinary people. It was a game of dark occult or black magic. Magicians and sorcerers from different parts of America came here to test their powers.
The rule was that two magicians would stand on opposite sides of the line. They would place their right palms on the ground and start chanting spells. The one with more spiritual and demonic power would pull the other across the line using the power of his chant. The loser would lose his respect and also a large amount of money pooled for the game.
The crowd cheered as Blackwood's biggest occultist, Jonah "The Wild," entered the field. No one could stand against Jonah's magic before. One by one, three powerful magicians lost to Jonah. Jonah had an arrogant smile on his face and bundles of dollars in his pocket.
Just then, a strange man pushed through the crowd. He wore an old black coat and had a scary, fierce look in his eyes. His name was Malakai. He challenged Jonah.
As the game started, the environment became completely silent. As soon as Jonah placed his hand on the ground and started chanting, a supernatural thing happened. It felt like an invisible rope was pulling Jonah violently across the line! Jonah dug his nails into the dirt to stop himself, but he could not. With a sudden pull, he crashed to the other side of the line.
Jonah's chest was scraped and bleeding. After losing for the first time in his life, he lay shivering on the ground. Malakai walked up to him and mocked him, "What happened, Jonah? Weren't you very proud? I will come back next month. Take your revenge if you can." Jonah's body burned with anger and insult. The game ended for that day. Arthur returned to his own city a few days later, but the terror of Blackwood stayed in his mind.
Part 2: The Forbidden Contract & Blood Revenge
About three months later, Arthur went back to Blackwood for some urgent work. When he met Thomas, Thomas was shaking. He said, "Arthur, what happened here after you left is beyond anyone's imagination."
Thomas started explaining: After losing to Malakai, Jonah suffered from a high fever for three days. Once he got well, he became crazy for revenge. Jonah was no ordinary magician; he had captured many evil spirits before. He disappeared for three days. No one knew where he went. When he returned, he had a strange object wrapped in a red cloth. There was a demonic confidence in his eyes.
Tuesday came again. The field was packed with people. Malakai mocked him, "What, Jonah? Will you fall flat on your face again today?" Jonah only smiled gently. The game began. Both placed their hands on the ground. But within five minutes, the whole field went silent. Everyone saw that Malakai's hand was being twisted and pulled toward Jonah! Malakai screamed and pulled a small bottle from his coat to sprinkle holy water on himself. Jonah's pull stopped for a moment.
Seeing this, Jonah did a terrifying thing. He bit his own left hand until it bled. He dropped a few drops of blood onto his right hand on the ground.
Instantly, the weather in the forest changed. The afternoon sky turned black, and a massive storm of dust and dry leaves formed around them. That dust tornado hit Malakai like an invisible monster and threw him 10 feet away across the line!
Malakai's eyes almost popped out, and blood poured from his mouth. He shook and told Jonah, "Jonah... what did you bring here? You do not have the power to control this! You made a huge mistake. You will have to pay for this." Jonah laughed loudly and said, "Stop your big talk, Malakai. I could have killed you right now. I spare your life, now run away!"
Part 3: Danny's Arrival & The Master's Fate
Jonah's joy did not last long. Every night, he started seeing a nightmare. A huge, black, hairy, ugly figure stood beside his bed and said, "Your time is up, Jonah... get ready to die." Jonah lost his sleep out of fear. He made protection circles around his room, but nothing worked. Helpless, he went to his master, Silas, for help. But when he reached Silas's house, a cold shiver ran down his spine. Silas had died two days ago—his dead body was hanging from an oak tree behind his house!
After that, real hell began for Jonah. Whenever he slept, an invisible hand would choke him. He could not scream, and his body became as thin as a skeleton from the pain.
Seeing no other way, Jonah's family brought a famous exorcist and priest from Georgia, Father Benjamin. Father Benjamin was a very powerful man in the spiritual world, and he had many good and holy spirits (angels/righteous spirits) under his command.
Father Benjamin stopped as soon as he stepped into Blackwood. He said, "I will not do this work. This man practiced black magic. This is against God's law; this is his punishment for his own sins." But because of the family's tears and the villagers' requests, the Father finally agreed. He said, "Tonight, I will sit in a completely dark room with the church elders and helpers. No one will enter until I say so."
Part 4: Facing the Darkness
The exorcism began at midnight. Father Benjamin held his holy cross and rosary and called his holy spirits. The air inside the room became ice-cold. Suddenly, in the semi-darkness, a group of holy spirits arrived and greeted the Father.
Father asked, "What is the problem with this man?" One of them said, "Father, a very powerful and ancient Christian demon named Danny has entered him. Danny was actually a priest of the spirits. To win his game, Jonah stole a cursed tooth belonging to Danny, which was kept by his master Silas. The tooth was wrapped in that red cloth. Because of that tooth, Danny was forced to be Jonah's slave. But now Danny is free, and he will kill Jonah slowly."
Father asked, "Can you capture him?" The holy spirits replied, "Danny is extremely powerful. If only the four of us go, our death is certain. We need more help." With Father's permission, they brought 20 more powerful holy spirits from their leader.
Late at night, while the whole house was praying and chanting God's name, a terrible storm suddenly started outside. It felt like an invisible war was happening out there. Screams and fighting sounds shook the area.
After a while, a thick black smoke gathered on the floor in front of the Father. Father drew a circle with holy water and trapped the smoke inside it.
A loud, twisted voice came out of the smoke, "My name is Danny! Why have you trapped me? I did nothing wrong! Jonah's master, Silas, kept me trapped for seven years without any crime. He made me do terrible sins. Even though I was a priest, I drowned in sin. The spirits of my kingdom have abandoned me."
Danny added, "When Jonah took that tooth wrapped in red cloth from Silas to win the game, I got my chance. The next day, I took Silas's shape and went to Jonah. Jonah happily gave the tooth back to me. As soon as I was free, I choked Silas on the first night and hung him from the tree. And now it is Jonah's turn. Whoever comes to save him, I will kill them too!"
Father Benjamin said calmly, "Only God knows when someone will die. Your time is up, Danny." Danny tried to attack the Father fiercely, but the holy spirits held him down. They said, "Father, lock him in a holy glass bottle right now, or he will destroy everyone."
Father sealed Danny inside a bottle forever and gave it to the holy spirits so they could throw it in a lonely place from where he could never return. However, this victory brought more sadness than joy. Two very dear holy spirits died while capturing Danny. Father could not hold back his tears for the sacrifice of those pure souls for a sinful magician.
Conclusion
Father Benjamin gave Jonah a glass of holy water to drink. Jonah slowly got better, but because of the black magic done by Danny, he lost all his memories. He could not recognize anyone, and he walked alone near the woods, talking to himself. The local people called him "Crazy Jonah." He died like this five years later.
After that incident, the "Line of Shadows" game was banned forever in Blackwood.
